Abstract
METHOD: A Prospective observational study conducted at Tertiary care hospital from May 1 to June 30,2021.
PURPOSE: To determine the prognosis in patients with COVID associated mucormycosis (CAM) undergoing orbital exenteration.
RESULTS: A total of 348 cases of CAM were considered in the study. In them,192 of 348 were COVID positive and 156 of 348 were in post COVID recovery at the time of diagnosis. 203 of 348 patients had ophthalmic involvement. Of these 203 patients,86 had no perception of light. 38 out of 86(44%) patients underwent orbital exenteration. These patients were followed up for survival prognosis for one month. Among ones exenterated without intracranial extension, 26 of 30 survived after 1 month and in those exenterated with intracranial extension 4 of 8 survived after 1 month.
CONCLUSION: Although the morbidity associated with exenteration is high and needs further procedures to improve cosmetic outcomes, exenteration is found to improve survival rates in such patients.
