Abstract
PURPOSE: To correlate severity of orbital involvement with mortality in patients with COVID associated Mucormycosis.
METHOD: Retrospective observational study conducted at Tertiary care hospital between 1 May and 30 June 2021.
RESULTS: Total 429 CAM patients were considered in the study, out of which 122 deaths occurred. CAM patients were categorised according to staging proposed by Honnavar et al. 126 patients belonged to stage 1+stage 2 of which 30(23.8%) died. 155 patients belonged to stage 3a+3b of which 36(23.2%) died. 110 patients belonged to stage 3c+3d of which 36(33%) died. 38 patients belonged to stage 4 of which 20(52.6%) died.
CONCLUSION: Majority of the patients in the study belonged to stage 3(ocular involvement). Mortality was found to be higher in patients who had staging of 3 or more. Knowing the severity of CAM stage surely aids in early medical and surgical intervention in order to slow down the progression and also to possibly avoid mortality in patients with CAM.
