Abstract
PURPOSE:To study the various causes of unilateral proptosis.
METHODS:47patients who presented to the eye department with unilateral proptosis during a period of 1 year were examined prospectively.Demographic details, clinical presentation, detailed ophthalmological examination, investigation details(B-scan,CT/MRI and HPE)and treatment details were noted.Value greater than 18mm and difference between both the eyes more than 2mm were considered significant.
RESULTS:In our study of unilateral proptosis, age of the patients were between 6-75 years and mostly above 40 years(65.9%).The minimum proptosis being 3mm and maximum 18mm.It was axial in 41 cases.Inflammatory pathology(82.9%)with most common etiology being orbital mucormycosis(57.4%)due to covid.
CONCLUSION:A proptosis, however small the bulge, malignancy has to be ruled out with collaboration of different specialties like ENT,radiology. The commonest cause is malignancy in other studies but our study showed more of an inflammatory origin.
