Abstract
AIM: To assess the incidence and progression of macular edema after cataract surgery in diabetic patients.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Observational prospective case study was done in 114 diabetic patients undergoing uncomplicated cataract surgery for the duration of 1.5 years. Patients with NPDR, PDR, any retinal disease or prior intraocular surgeries were excluded. Comprehensive ocular examination and OCT was done 1 week prior to surgery. OCT repeated at 1st and 4th week postoperatively.
RESULT: The foveal thickness being maximum at 1st week showed increase by 8.5um i.e. 3.8% increase over the postoperative study mean. 6.33% patients continued to have increased value at 4th week.
CONCLUSION: Maximum patients showed improvement at 4th week postoperatively but 6.33% continued to have increased value which was more in patient with high HbA1C level and hypertension leading to poor visual outcome. Hence diabetes may be considered as a risk factor to poor visual outcome after cataract surgery.
